Let's talk about some of the equipment we use for exercise:
Kettlebells? My mentor Vanessa Schneider taught us how to use them and modify exercises for anyone. The shape of the handle on top and the weight on the bottom means the gravity is requiring you to use more muscles which equals more energy, more calories being burned.(That means great for endurance and weight loss.)
An example: if you swing a kettlebell for rounds of time versus using a treadmill or any other cardio machine, the calorie burn is pretty equal. You will not get bulky but you will build strength and improve your body composition. Just like we carry grocery bags, suitcases, walking your dog, lifting up a child when we play requires momentum and strength.
The TRX is a great compliment to kettlebells.My mentor: Lissa B.A.taught us how to train the beginner to the advanced person.
Example: if you have trouble squatting and need extra support to do it safely the TRX is perfect. Here's why? By grabbing the handles for support you are able to achieve the exercise at your range of motion
. Now if your intermediate, advanced exerciser you can adjust your angle lower for more intensity or do a one legged squat for example. The list goes on because there are many TRX exercises for a full body workout for all populations.

Gary Martinez owner of Functional Fitness Colorado Springs began his journey in the fitness world as a teenager. After buying his first weight bench and sand weight set back in the 80's he read and practiced exercises and followed the bodybuilding circuit. After getting a YMCA membership in high school to train him then played sports at the high school level to include: cross country running, wrestling and competed in a few power lifting meets.
The passion was always there and in 2011 he went to school for personal trainer at Intellitec Medical Institute in Colorado Springs where he earned his Associates Degree in Occupational science in Personal Fitness Trainer and later earned his certification. Gary continues to learn in the field and prides himself on helping people find a solution to achieve their health goals and make it a lifestyle change. He spends his free time with his family and takes up the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
